Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta (Nine Dragon river delta) is the region in South Western Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and flows into the sea through a network of nine distributaries. There are 13 provinces in the region including Can tho, An Giang, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre, Ca mau, Dong Thap, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Long An, Soc Trang, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh and Vinh Long. 

The area is almost covered by water during flooding seasons. Mekong Delta traveling is one of the most attractive tourisms in Vietnam. Apart from trying fresh fruit in large orchards and Southern cuisine, listening to “don ca tai tu” (a local traditional music), visitors also have a chance to take part in the floating markets- a unique feature in this Western Zone.

There is a great variety of physical landscapes in the Mekong Delta, from mountains and highlands to flat flood plains.

Climate in Mekong Delta and best time to visit Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta has 2 distinguished seasons: rainy season (from May to November) and sunny season (from December to April). The water color of all the rivers is brown in rainy season because of the alluvium, the color changes into light blue in the sunny season. The best time to travel to Mekong Delta is from December to June next year.

Transportation: Getting there and away

By Air: Vietnam airlines has some daily flights between Ho chi minh and Can Tho, Ho Chi minh and Rach gia, Ha noi and Can Tho, Rach Gia and Phu quoc Island, ect.

By Boat: speed boats between Rach Gia and Phu Quoc Island. Tourists can take a boat Tour or Cruise Tour from Ho Chi Minh to MeKong Delta.( Best way to travel to Mekong Delta is to book package tours from travel agencies or companies)

From Mekong Delta (Southern Vietnam) to Cambodia, travelers can enter by overland or by river, need to apply Visa on entry to Cambodia (possible at some but not all entry points); but Vietnam visas on arrival must be obtained in advance.

By Road: From Ho Chi Minh, Tourists can rent a car, taxi or take express bus or Open Bus for your trip to Mekong Delta. Almost travelers will book Ho Chi Minh City tour and Mekong Delta Tours departing from Ho Chi Minh City.

Tien Giang : Cai Be Floating market, My Tho with Mekong Delta boat trip, Thoi Son Islet, Dong Tam Snake Farm, and Dong Thap Muoi Area, Vinh Trang Pagoda, Cao Dai temple

Chau Doc ( An Giang ) : boat trip in the floating villages, Sam Mountain, Chau Phu temple,Tay An pagoda, Lady Chua Xu temple and the tomb of Thoai Ngoc Hau, Chau Doc Canal which defines the border with Cambodia.

What to eat in Mekong Delta (cuisine in Mekong Delta)

With various and diverse tropical fruits, visitors to the Mekong Delta can enjoy the seasonal fruits all round year. Food here is the typical of Southern cuisine with the using of various dried fish and sauces, seafood rural materials and simple cooking methods such as Southern sour soup (canh chua Nam Bo), roasted snakehead fish (ca loc nuong trui), sour hotpot (lau chua), lau mam, and so on.

-Ben Tre: Apart from tasty food of home-style flavor, Ben Tre is also famous for its coconut and its product (coconut milk, rice boiled in coconut milk, goby fish cooked in coconut milk)

-Can Tho: beside eating fresh fruit right in orchards, visitors also can enjoy local food such as cong cake (Tet cake), baked cassava and coconut cake

-Tien Giang (Cai Be): many kinds of fresh fruits here are not only sold in floating markets but also have trade names and exported revenues such as Hoa Loc sweet mango, Cai Be mandarin,

- An Giang ( Chau Doc) is famous for local and typical specialties such as Phong Phu My cake, Chau Doc fish sauce, frozen almyra fruit (thot not uop lanh).
